Hayles
and Burton on Target
October 20, 2004

Jamaican strikers Barry Hayles and Deon Burton both scored
fine goals to propel their respective English clubs to 2-1
victories on
Tuesday night.
Despite not playing for nearly six weeks because of
injury, Hayles made a sensational return for Milwall in
the English League Championship by scoring in the club's
win over Gillingham.
It was Hayles' first goal for the club in only his second
match, after being sidelined with a rib injury sustained
on debut against Ipswich on September 12.
Following a great build-up between Dennis Wise and Jody
Morris, Hayles collected the ball 20 yards from goal, used
his strength to beat his marker and maintain possession,
before firing an unstoppable low drive from the edge of
the box.
The 33rd minute strike by Hayles came after he had made a
return to serious training just a week earlier. His first
competitive game was a reserves match last week where he
played for 60 minutes before being substituted.

Whitmore
on Target
October
20, 2004

Reggae
Boyz captain Theodore Whitmore has come in for high praise
after scoring his first goals for English League One side
Tranmere Rovers to give them a 3-1 win over Huddersfield
on Tuesday night.
Jason McAteer and Iain Hume combined to set up Whitmore
for his opener in the 15th minute, a right-footed blast
into the top right hand corner of the goal that gave the
Huddersfield custodian little chance.
Whitmore's second goal came in the 61st minute and broke
the 1-1 deadlock in the game, as he collected Ryan
Taylor's pass from the left flank to drill the ball into
the top left hand corner of the goal.
"When I heard he had scored for Jamaica, I was
thinking about this game coming up and playing three in
midfield, one with freedom and he was ideal for the
role."
Whitmore could have finished with a hat-trick but was
denied in the 65th minute when the Huddersfield goalie was
forced into a superb save to keep the Jamaican off the
score-sheet again.
"He's very good on the ball and away from home he
will settle things down every now and then," Little
pointed out.

Jamaica
tie Panama in Panama
October 10,
2004

Jamaica's
Reggae Boyz and Panama played to a tense 1-1 draw in their
CONCACAF Group A World Cup qualifier at the Rommel
Fernandez Stadium in Panama City last night.
Panama
took a deserved lead through striker Roberto Brown in the
22nd minute. It was Brown's third goal against Jamaica in
as many games.
Theodore Whitmore equalised for the Reggae Boyz in the
74th minute and he should have scored the winner in the
dying minutes but kicked straight to the Panamanian
goalkeeper after Ricardo Fuller, dribbling down the left,
had opened up the defence. The result means that with two
rounds remaining, both teams move
to five points and
remain in contention for a place in the final phase of the
World Cup qualifiers slated for next year.
Jamaica
will host El Salvador in their penultimate Group A game at
the National Stadium in Kingston on Wednesday

Jason
Euell gets FIFA clearance
October
13, 2004

In
a dramatic but somewhat mysterious change of tack,
Charlton Athletic striker Jason Euell was yesterday given
the "all clear" to play for Jamaica by FIFA's
players' status committee.
Euell's and the Jamaica Football Federation's (JFF's)
application for the ex-England Under-21 representative to
change association teams was controversially denied last
week by the FIFA, claiming that when Euell represented
England he was not yet a Jamaican citizen.
That ruling came even though the FIFA claimed that
"we have taken due note of the fact that... Euell is
currently in the process of obtaining the Jamaican
passport, which he is eligible to apply for on the basis
of his descent".
Euell's father and grandfather are Jamaicans by birth, and
based on Jamaican law, is a Jamaican citizen since birth,
by descent.
"I'm very happy," Euell, 27, said on the
Charlton Athletic website yesterday. "It's taken a
long time, but it's great news. To be honest, I'd still
like to see it in writing because it's been so
complicated, but it looks like everything will be
worthwhile."
The JFF received a faxed letter yesterday confirming the
clearance. And yesterday the FIFA claimed that "new
evidence" provided by the JFF accounted for the
change of decision.

Home Based Boyz impress against Guatemala
October 09,
2004

Jamaica's
home-based Reggae Boyz put up an amazing display of
character and guts when they clawed their way from two
goals down with two minutes to play in their friendly
international against Guatemala in Fort Lauderdale last
Saturday.
Two well-taken
goals in the dying moments by Harbour View's midfield
maestro, Jermaine Hue, enabled the surprise draw.
Brazilian coach Sebastiao Lazaroni and technical director
Carl Brown were both impressed by the team's effort,
especially that of six Under-20 players.
Guatemala, who currently lead their CONCACAF World Cup
Group B qualifying series, started the game with a
second-rate team but made sweeping half-time changes,
bringing on six of their seasoned World Cup campaigners as
10-man Jamaica looked threatening.

Fuller has card rescinded
October 09,
2004

ZURICH, Switzerland
(CMC) -FIFA, football's world governing body, is at odds
with the English Football Association over the rescinding
of yellow and red cards.
The FA's new disciplinary code allows match officials to
change their decision within 48 hours of a match.
But the world governing body says referees cannot change
decisions after a match, except for mistaken identities.
"It is clear in the laws of the game that a referee
cannot take back a decision once he has restarted the
game," FIFA spokesman Markus Siegler said.
Chelsea's Didier Drogba and Portsmouth's Ricardo Fuller of
Jamaica have had cautions revoked by referees this season,
after they were originally booked for diving.
The prolific Jamaican striker will be in action for the
Reggae Boyz today against Panama, and he also took part in
the team's preparation camp in Fort Lauderdale, Florida,
this week.
