Wednesday, January 31, 2007

Jamaica international Jermaine 'Teddy' Johnson has joined English
Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday from League One Bradford City
for an undisclosed sum, website reports claimed yesterday.

Though no figure was released on the transfer amount, it is expected that
whatever was agreed to for the pacy winger would certainly be in excess
of the rejected Derby County bid of £250,000 earlier this month.
Johnson's contract, claimed Wednesday's official club website
WednesdayWorld, will run until the summer of 2010.

The 26-year-old moved to Bradford last summer where he scored four
goals in 30 starts. Fellow Reggae Boyz, goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and
midfielder Omar Daley currently ply their trade at Bradford.

Johnson, who first moved to England from local club Tivoli Gardens for a
loan spell at Bolton Wanderers in 2004, also had a two-year spell at
Oldham Athletic.

Now that he is on the way back up, Johnson, 26, told the club's official
website WednesdayWorld he is delighted and determined to do his best
for the team and the Hillsborough fans.

"I'm feeling pleased as I really want to come and do well for the club and
for the gaffer (manager), who has brought me here," Johnson said. "It is
a big challenge because I have to come and prove my strengths to the
crowd. the manager has told me that the team works hard together and
that I need to come in and work as the other players do," he added.

Wednesday manager, Brian Laws, told WednesdayWorld he believes that
Johnson will bring a different aspect to the Owls squad.

The Wednesday boss swooped for Johnson after pinpointing his speed and
ability to operate in various attacking positions as factors he wanted to
bring to the team.

"We have gone for him because he's got something not many teams
have - electric pace," Laws was quoted as saying. "He is as quick running
with the ball as he is without it, and this will give us the dimension we
need either out wide or up front."

Laws also believes that Johnson will be a big hit with the fans.
"I think the supporters will love him because he's one of those players
who gets you on the edge of your seat."

Johnson's move comes just a day ahead of today's deadline for the
closure of the transfer market window.

In the January transfers, two other Reggae Boyz have picked up jobs in
the lucrative British market. Midfielder Daley moved to Bradford from the
US's Charleston Battery and striker Luton Shelton joined fellow Jamaican
Claude Davis at English Premier League side Sheffield United from Sweden's
Helsingborgs.
