HOWARD WALKER, Observer writer
Saturday, August 18, 2007

Jamaican striker Deon Burton helped Sheffield Wednesday into the Carling Cup second round, scoring in
the 49th minute as his team came from behind to defeat Rotherham United 3-1 on Thursday.

Burton, 30, scored his team's second goal after Rotherham had taken a 34th minute lead through
Danny Harrison. Burton had in fact missed an early chance in the second minute when he was denied
by the Rotherham goalkeeper.

He was bought from Rotherham for £110,000 in January 2006, played alongside fellow Reggae Boy
Jermaine "Teddy" Johnson for the entire 90 minutes.

Last season Burton was Sheffield Wednesday's joint top scorer with 16 goals. He last represented
the Reggae Boyz against England on June 3, 2006.

He has played for at least nine clubs in the premier league and lower divisions, including Cardiff,
Derby, Barnsley, Stoke, Portmouth, Walsall, Swindon, Brentford and Rotherham, has rattled up
85 goals in nine seasons since 1997.

Born in England of a Jamaican father, Burton made his international debut for the Reggae Boyz on
September 7, 1997 in the latter and more difficult stages of their World Cup qualifying campaign.

He finished with four goals from five games, an exploit which won him Jamaica's Sportsman-of-the-Year
Award for almost single-handedly getting the country to the 1998 finals.

Burton also appeared in everyone of Jamaica's games as they finished fourth in the 1998 CONCACAF
Gold Cup, but he failed to score. He was also in the squad that failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup.

He was included in the qualifying squad for the 2003 Gold Cup, making substitute appearances, but
was dropped from the squad after qualification.

Burton was left in the wilderness for a while, but was recalled three years later for his next international
involvement - against England which the Reggae Boyz lost 0-6.

To date Burton has scored eight goals for Jamaica from 44 games and with new technical director
Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic around and with World Cup Qualifiers set to start next year, Burton's chances
of once again playing regularly for Jamaica are as good as any.
